For many couples, food is often one of the most important, memorable parts of the whole wedding. But what exactly happens at a tasting and how do you prepare for it? A wedding tasting is when you taste the menu items, or proposed menu items, with your caterer for your reception.
The tasting typically takes place weeks, or more often, months before your big day to allow plenty of time for any adjustments or changes to the final menu. If you have already signed a contract with one, this gives you the chance to get to know their presentation style and taste their food.
We consulted with Ethan Mantle, chef and owner of Componere Fine Catering , for his expert tips on everything you need to know about wedding tastings. Meet the Expert. Mantle and his team have made their mark with their world-class cuisine, stunning presentation, and warm and approachable service.
Tastings can vary quite a bit by venue and caterer. For example, if you are using a wedding venue where everything is in-house which is typically the more budget-friendly option , your tasting might be in a big ballroom with other couples and a big buffet featuring all the menu items you are able to select from. What about portion size? Note, though, that smaller portions are offered at tastings, so make sure to ask about actual serving sizes.
Do the fruits and veggies look freshly picked, or are they wilting a bit? Was the meat frozen? You can ask! Also, note if the food is hot when it comes to you. If the food is laid out in a buffet, is it properly heated or cooled? The caterer may be providing linens, plates, dishes, and silverware for your wedding.
Does the china fit your style, and if not, does the caterer have other options? Do we get to pick the tasting menu? But how they charge for samples varies. Reading the wedding-reception menu is one thing, but tasting the food is even more important. Not only will you want to consider how much you will need for each table, but a tasting will help you decide which plates are most delicious and suitable for your guests.
Presentation is so important for many couples. You are not going to want to eat a dish that does not look appetizing — nor will any of your attendees. Request that your food tasting be plated exactly how it will be at the wedding, or as similarly as possible. Whether this is provided at the tasting or not, custom cocktails are always a fun choice for special events.
If you have this in mind, tasting the food will help you decide which libations will work well with each dish. Also, ask the caterer if he or she has any suggestions. Cocktails that include local or seasonal fruits or spices are a great way to make the concoction extra tasty!
