Furthermore, if the patient still has children at home, childcare aid may also be needed. Facelift patients usually need to take one to two weeks off of work, too, in order to heal. Recovery from a thread lift, on the other hand, is comparatively easy. Thread lifts can be performed under local, rather than general anesthesia, meaning that thread lift patients can drive themselves home and look after themselves immediately after having their procedure.

While some patients will experience a little bit of soreness, redness and swelling after having a thread lift and therefore wish to take the rest of the day off, most can return to work immediately. Strong pain medication is seldom needed after having a thread lift, making it easier for patients to return to their normal routine.

This procedure is therefore ideal for people who have children at home or those who have busy, demanding careers. While thread lift recovery is not particularly intensive, patients will still have to take a few minor precautions while healing. It's important to make sure that you don't rub your face vigorously while cleansing it or applying moisturizer for at least a week after having threads placed. You should also try to prop your head up slightly so that you don't roll over directly onto your face while sleeping.

Thread lifts are low risk, thanks to how noninvasive they are. There is virtually no risk of scarring, severe bruising, bleeding or other complications after having a thread lift. In rare cases, patients may experience irritation, infection or their sutures becoming visible under their skin.

If this occurs, however, the sutures can simply be removed and the patient's face will return to its prior state. Finally, because thread lifts are much easier to perform than facelift surgery, they are much more affordable.

Advantageous though thread lifts are, it's important for patients to maintain realistic expectations for this procedure. While thread lifts certainly produce visible changes, they will generally only lift the face by a few millimeters; as such, they create a more subtle and natural looking end result than facelift surgery.

Thread lifts are therefore best suited to patients who are dealing with mild to moderate, rather than severe, signs of skin laxity.

The ideal thread lift candidate is usually in his or her late thirties to early fifties, whereas most patients over the age of about 55 will benefit more profoundly from facelift surgery.

Thread lifts can, however, provide a facelift alternative for older patients who are unable to have surgery for medical reasons. Because thread lifts can be performed under local anesthesia, many people who have age-related conditions that make them ineligible for surgery like high blood pressure, type two diabetes and cardiovascular disease can safely have this treatment.

If you have any outstanding health conditions, make sure to talk to your doctor about whether or not a thread lift might be right for you. It's important to understand that while no lifting technique can produce permanent results, facelift surgery will usually produce longer lasting results than a thread lift. The results of facelift surgery can last up to a decade, whereas a thread lift will generally last from one to three years.

However, because the thread lift procedure is so low-risk, patients who like the results of their thread lift can usually opt to have a fresh set of temporary sutures placed once their old sutures are absorbed by the body. However, while these procedures rely on a similar mechanism of action and both produce excellent results, there are some key differences between them that patients need to be aware of.

Below, we'll explore how these two procedures compare to one another. A mini-pull, such as a LifeStyle lift, does not do this. For younger people who have minimal skin looseness, a mini-facelift can restore their beauty very efficiently with smaller incisions.

However, a mini-lift differs from a Lifestyle Lift in that patients are chosen very carefully and the techniques used are more careful and precise. A true mini-lift, chosen specifically for a certain patient, is much different than a cookie-cutter branded mini-lift. We do our best to offer the pros and cons of each procedure and leave it up to you to draw the positive or negative conclusions. But with branded facelifts, like the Lifestyle Lift, it's important to separate the marketing messages from the actual results.

The Lifestyle Lift promised a mini-lift under local anesthetic, for a much lower price than traditional facelifts. While that promise sounded attractive, the truth is that the results did not consistently deliver on that pledge. Today, the company has suspended operations and closed its doors. If the Lifestyle Lift had delivered on its promises, it might not be out of business today.

As with any branded procedures, the marketing message overlooks the downsides and limitations of the procedure. Brands are most interested in driving sales, not necessarily helping patients choose the best procedure for their unique needs.

In some instances, however, a branded procedure may be a good option to bring you the results you want. We recommend to always seek the counsel of a trustworthy, board certified plastic surgeon before buying into the hype or propaganda of any procedure. He is a Master Artist who is known for creating beautiful, stunning, and natural results.

He has successfully performed more than 10, cosmetic procedures of the face, breasts, and body over a 20 year period. High vs. The recovery time is typically less than a traditional face lift and there is less bruising and swelling.

The main difference between these two procedures is the way that the SMAS is sutured. The lifestyle lift also did not consider the placement of the incision. Dr Berkowitz is meticulous in hiding this incision so that even your hair dresser will have difficulty finding it once fully healed. Cosmetic surgery has gained popularity over the years as a way of fighting the appearance of aging.

Before the advent of the Lifestyle and Quick Lifts, face lifts were the most popular option. Lifestyle and Quick Lifts are considerably less expensive than face lifts, are minimally invasive, and offer a faster recovery time.

Not everyone is a good candidate for a lift. Having surgery by a trained professional in a certified environment can be very safe and rewarding for the patient. However surgery can also be quite dangerous if performed by a poorly trained doctor in the back office of a strip mall. A quality surgeon should educate you as a consumer and also weigh your risks and benefits very carefully before proceeding with any operation. You should meet with your surgeon a number of times instead of a non-medical salesperson.

Most TRX systems are portable, which could be convenient for a touring artist like Gaga. Gaga told ABC News that she trained for her Super Bowl halftime performance by singing while using the VersaClimber , a stationary exercise machine that provides a full body workout by mimicking climbing a wall.

It's cardio while singing. Lady Gaga has been spotted attending multiple SoulCycle classes over the years and The Hollywood Reporter even reported that she spent her 26th birthday at a Los Angeles SoulCycle location.

Eat what you want. Listen, I'm telling you, the pressures in Hollywood and that celebrity aura puts on young people, it's too much and, you know, eat what you want, be who you are. While Gaga more than likely still enjoys indulgences when she's in the mood for it, it's pretty clear that she's also really focused on eating healthy as much as she can.

And since we already know that she loves veggies and meals full of fiber, it's not surprising to hear that she really enjoys a nice big salad on most days. In an interview with People , Chef O'Connor said that Gaga always has a salad throughout the day "whether it's for lunch or dinner. But the star doesn't only stick with a plain, boring salad consisting of greens with some vegetables thrown on top. She mixes it up and adds a bunch of different ingredients. O'Connor explained, "The salad can be different and change; it doesn't always have to be super lettuce-based, rather it can have other components that are a little bit more satisfying.

When it comes to breakfasts and stomach-filling snacks, Gaga usually opts for something nutritious that is also easy and fast to eat no matter how busy she is — but especially when she's on tour. One option that she often relies on is a good smoothie. In an interview with People , O'Connor said that Gaga loves "fresh" smoothies that are full of nutrients and real foods, not just sugar.

She explained, "She likes natural based smoothies, vegan with coconut, coconut water, all fresh, and she tries to be very good at that on tour. Smoothies are one way that Gaga makes eating healthy easy. Another way is by planning everything she's going to eat, which is why she has personal chefs. O'Connor told Self , "She has a million things on her plate. To have someone who plans her meals, and sets things aside for her, then she knows that there's no cheating.

It's no secret that Gaga is an Italian-American who is really proud of her heritage. So, it's not surprising that she's a big fan of pasta, especially when she makes it herself, which she appears to do quite often.

In , she posted a photo on Instagram of herself making ravioli with the caption, "Made fresh homemade raviolis this weekend with butternut squash and basil pesto from the garden. In an interview with The New Potato , O'Connor said that when Gaga is home, "with her hair down, whether I'm cooking or we're going out, she'll usually pick Italian," adding that, "It's just home for her. In an interview with Conan O'Brien , he said that they bonded over her pasta when they first met to talk about the movie, noting, "She made me feel so comfortable.

Sure, Lady Gaga knows how to keep things super healthy, but she also knows how to maintain a good balance when it comes to what she eats.

Aside from enjoying pasta and sugary cereal, she also loves to indulge in sweets when she wants. Here, 40 things Lady Gaga does to take care of herself. You'll definitely want to follow suit with one or even a few of these habits. Gaga's got breakfast on lock.

Gaga's go-to snacks include whole-grain pretzels, GG crispbread crackers, rice crisps, health bars, nuts, and baked chips. She varies her snacks with some sweet and some savory, like bittersweet chocolate or a squeeze pack of almond butter , according to O'Connor.

Lady Gaga also makes sure to stay hydrated through rehearsals and performances. On the road, she drinks a lot of tea, fresh coconut water , and fresh green juice, O'Connor told The Feast. Gaga steers clear of any processed juices, but, "if she were to drink juice, it would be a green juice made fresh with kale and spinach and celery and cucumbers, parsley, lemon," O'Connor shared. Gaga has been working out with celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak for years.

Gaga nourishes herself during a cold with a spicy homemade beverage. Gaga often fills up on salads during lunch. These aren't your humdrum garden salads, hers include a lot more than lettuce. Fresh veggies from my garden, thank you earth.

The first inkling that plants suck CO 2 from the air dates back to the s, when Swiss pastor Jean Senebier grew plants under different experimental conditions. He suggested that plants decompose CO 2 from the air and incorporate the carbon, an idea corroborated by subsequent discoveries about the mechanisms of photosynthesis. The rationale is that trees can lock up carbon in their wood and roots for decades or even centuries.

The climate treaty known as the Kyoto Protocol allowed rich countries to count carbon storage in forests towards their targets for limiting greenhouse-gas emissions. Later negotiations laid out a framework for enabling wealthy countries to pay poorer tropical countries to reduce emissions from deforestation and to increase carbon in forests.

Source: X. Song et al. Nature , — Such schemes required firm data on how much carbon is locked up in forests. In the past few decades, scientists have worked to create national estimates of carbon loss and gain from vegetation by studying field plots and by combing through satellite data. Researchers have known for decades that tree leaves absorb more sunlight than do other types of land cover, such as fields or bare ground. This effect is especially pronounced at higher latitudes and in mountainous or dry regions, where slower-growing coniferous trees with dark leaves cover light-coloured ground or snow that would otherwise reflect sunlight.

Most scientists agree, however, that tropical forests are clear climate coolers: trees there grow relatively fast and transpire massive amounts of water that forms clouds, two effects that help to cool the climate. More-recent studies have branched out to include other ways in which forests can influence climate.

As trees live, grow and die, scientists have learnt, they are in constant conversation with the air, swapping carbon, water, light and a bewildering array of chemicals that can interact with the climate. Atmospheric chemist Nadine Unger, then at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, conducted one of the first global studies examining one part of this exchange: the influence of volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, emitted by trees.

These include isoprene, a small hydrocarbon that can warm the globe in several ways. It can react with nitrogen oxides in the air to form ozone — a potent climate-warming gas when it resides in the lower atmosphere. Isoprene can also lengthen the lifetime of atmospheric methane — another greenhouse gas. Yet isoprene can have a cooling influence, too, by helping to produce aerosol particles that block incoming sunlight. Unger ran an Earth-system model that estimated the effects of chemical emissions from forests.

Her results suggest that the conversion of forests to farmland throughout the industrial era might have had little overall impact on climate 3. As a corollary, Unger suggested that reforestation would also have uncertain climate effects. Trees in tropical and temperate zones emit huge quantities of isoprene that is not accounted for in most forestry schemes.

She acknowledged that her study was a first step, and called for increased monitoring of forest chemicals and their atmospheric interactions. The article, and especially the headline which Unger did not write , triggered a tsunami of complaints from researchers, who disputed the science and said the piece threatened to undermine years of research and advocacy. At metres high, the Zotino Tall Tower Observatory measures gases and aerosols above taiga forest in central Siberia.

A similar tall tower in the Amazon makes measurements above the tropical rainforest. Unger says she received death threats, and that some colleagues stopped speaking to her. Some scientists, however, agreed that it was important to look at the impacts of forest VOCs. A team led by Dominick Spracklen and Catherine Scott, atmospheric chemists at the University of Leeds, UK, ran a model that included how aerosols from forests can seed clouds, which reflect sunlight.

They concluded that the net effect of VOCs from forests is to cool the global climate 4. Unger, who is now at the University of Exeter, UK, and Spracklen are discussing using a common experimental design to try to resolve their differences.

They and other researchers say that such studies are hamstrung by sparse data sets on forest emissions. The latest findings are piling on even more complexity.

Ecologist Sunitha Pangala at Lancaster University, UK, spent much of and in the Amazon rainforest, where she placed gas-measuring chambers around the trunks of more than 2, trees. Researchers had previously assumed that methane leaked into the air directly from the soil, where it is produced by microbes. The new work suggests that trees could be another conduit for that microbial methane, potentially explaining why more methane has been detected above tropical wetlands than has been measured emanating from soil alone.

In a study first published last October, Gauci and other colleagues added another wrinkle when they found both methane and nitrous oxide, also a greenhouse gas, leaking from trees in upland forests 6. The global significance of these findings is still unclear. Pangala and Gauci both estimate that the cooling effect of trees taking up carbon greatly outstrips the warming from tree emissions of methane and nitrous oxide.

But Kristofer Covey, an environmental scientist at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, has found methane leaking from non-wetland trees in temperate forests 7 , and argues that such emissions could, in some places, diminish the climate benefits of trees more than researchers and environmentalists realize.

The recent explosion of results underscores the need for a full account of the impacts of forests, says Unger. Scientists who champion forests say that although more research is always good, existing results are mature enough to support the use of forests to fight climate change, especially given the urgency of the problem. Before, the training sessions were open to the public. But Guardiola's arrival in changed everything. The Catalan coach wanted to protect his players from prying eyes and derogatory comments by moving to Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper in Sant Joan Despi, 8. Indeed, the blaugranas train in public at the Mini Estadi around January 5 each year, the date being chosen according to the calendar of the F.

The disadvantage is that none stop because they are focused on the session that awaits them. Our tips: 1- If you know anything about cars, they all arrive in their Audi. It's up to you to keep your eyes open! Training is long and boring for a fan. We have to wait and unfortunately there is nothing to do around Ciutat Joan Gamper.

I recommend you to have a coffee in the village at 10 minutes on foot. First of all, come one hour after training begins. The first players leave after 1hh but at least you will not miss them. Then choose your access. There is the one near the roundabout, where the majority of players pass. But there is also one along, the "avenue du 11 septembre" that Busquets uses all the time.

The training sessions back then were quite short and very intense, lots of rondos and shooting training with a moving ball. Interestingly, Rijkaard himself often took part in the games and he also did not give up.

Under Guardiola, smaller and larger rondos became the basis of training. He emphasized specific situations, e. Pep also put emphasis on short and long passing, which we also often saw in pre-match warm-ups.

Guardiola was also the one who decided to close the training for spectators and the media, so the best team in the history of football could only be seen at the open training sessions held every few months. Almost impossible now. To sum up, I will say that the challenge may be bigger now, but the satisfaction from scoring a selfie with one of the stars is bigger, too!

Due to the lack of insulin, cells are not receiving an adequate fuel source to produce energy. Even though the blood is loaded with glucose, the cells go into a starvation mode. This triggers the release of glucagon and other counter-regulatory hormones that promote the breakdown of triglycerides into free fatty acids and initiate gluconeogenesis to produce more glucose for the starving cells. This further elevates the blood glucose level as the body begins to metabolize protein and fat to produce a source of energy.

Due to the insulin deficiency and release of large amounts of glucagon, free fatty acids circulate in abundance in the blood and are metabolized into acetoacetic acid and B-hydroxybutric acid - both of which are strong organic acids and are referred to as ketones.

As acetoacetic acid is metabolized it produces acetone, which begins to accumulate in the blood. In normal metabolism, ketones would be used as fuel in the peripheral tissue; however, due to the starvation state of the cells, the ketones are not used.

An increase in ketone production and a decrease in peripheral cell use lead to metabolic acidosis — also called ketoacidosis. This is reflected in a decreasing pH value typically less than 7. The patient will also begin to eliminate large amounts of ketones through excretion in the urine. A glucose molecule produces an osmotic effect by drawing water across a semipermeable membrane.

As an excessive amount of glucose enters the renal tubules, it draws a large amount of water that ends up producing a significant amount of urine. This is known as osmotic diuresis and leads to volume depletion and dehydration in the patient. Large amounts of ketones also collect in the urine. Because ketones are strong organic acids, they must be buffered in order to be excreted. Sodium is typically used as the buffer. As we have been instructed, where sodium goes, water follows.

Thus, the sodium used to buffer the ketones also draws a large amount of water into the renal tubules, which produces excessive urine and leads to further volume depletion and dehydration. The loss of large amounts of fluid also leads to the excretion of other electrolytes, such as potassium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorous.

This produces electrolyte imbalance and disturbances. The term diabetic ketoacidosis literally explains what the patient is experiencing. The term diabetes is often thought of as dealing with a glucose derangement or imbalance. However, this is not true. Diabetes simply means an increase in urine output. Thus, diabetic in DKA implies an increase in urine output that occurs from osmotic diuresis. The term ketoacidosis is fairly self explanatory.

It refers to the metabolic acidosis resulting from ketone production from fat metabolism. The DKA patient is therefore prone to metabolic acidosis from:. The slow and gradual onset of signs and symptoms is related to the accumulating effect of the dehydration from osmotic diuresis and buildup of acid from ketone production. As the cells slowly become dehydrated and acidotic, the signs and symptoms begin to appear. And as the brain cells slowly dehydrate and are affected by the increasing acidic state over hours and days, the mental status slowly begins to alter.

Osmotic diuresis typically produces the classic signs and symptoms of hyperglycemia:. Osmotic diuresis leads to dehydration and a potential hypovolemic state from fluid loss, producing the following signs:. The deep and rapid respiratory rate blows off carbon dioxide, which is necessary for the production of carbonic acid.

In patients suspected of having diabetic ketoacidosis, serum electrolytes, blood urea nitrogen BUN and creatinine, glucose, ketones, and osmolarity should be measured. Urine should be tested for ketones. Patients who appear significantly ill and those with positive ketones should have arterial blood gas measurement. DKA is diagnosed by an arterial pH 7. Acidemia is serum pH A presumptive diagnosis can be made when urine glucose and ketones are strongly positive.

Urine test strips and some assays for serum ketones may underestimate the degree of ketosis because they detect acetoacetic acid and not beta-hydroxybutyric acid, which is usually the predominant ketoacid.

Symptoms and signs of a triggering illness should be pursued with appropriate studies eg, cultures, imaging studies. Adults should have an ECG to screen for acute myocardial infarction and to help determine the significance of abnormalities in serum potassium. Other laboratory abnormalities include hyponatremia, elevated serum creatinine, and elevated plasma osmolality. Hyperglycemia may cause dilutional hyponatremia, so measured serum sodium is corrected by adding 1.

As acidosis is corrected, serum potassium drops. An initial potassium level 4. Rarely IV sodium bicarbonate if pH 7 after 1 hour of treatment. The most urgent goals for treating diabetic ketoacidosis are rapid intravascular volume repletion, correction of hyperglycemia and acidosis, and prevention of hypokalemia 1 Treatment reference Diabetic ketoacidosis DKA is an acute metabolic complication of diabetes characterized by hyperglycemia, hyperketonemia, and metabolic acidosis.

Hyperglycemia causes an osmotic diuresis with Identification of precipitating factors is also important. Treatment should occur in intensive care settings because clinical and laboratory assessments are initially needed every hour or every other hour with appropriate adjustments in treatment. Intravascular volume should be restored rapidly to raise blood pressure and ensure glomerular perfusion; once intravascular volume is restored, remaining total body water deficits are corrected more slowly, typically over about 24 hours.

Initial volume repletion in adults is typically achieved with rapid IV infusion of 1 to 3 L of 0. Adults with diabetic ketoacidosis typically need a minimum of 3 L of saline over the first 5 hours. When blood pressure is stable and urine flow adequate, normal saline is replaced by 0. Pediatric maintenance fluids Maintenance requirements Dehydration is significant depletion of body water and, to varying degrees, electrolytes.

Symptoms and signs include thirst, lethargy, dry mucosa, decreased urine output, and, as the degree Initial fluid therapy should be 0. Hyperglycemia is corrected by giving regular insulin 0. Insulin adsorption onto IV tubing can lead to inconsistent effects, which can be minimized by preflushing the IV tubing with insulin solution. Children should be given a continuous IV insulin infusion of 0.

Ketones should begin to clear within hours if insulin is given in sufficient doses. Serum pH and bicarbonate levels should also quickly improve, but restoration of a normal serum bicarbonate level may take 24 hours. Rapid correction of pH by bicarbonate administration may be considered if pH remains 7 after about an hour of initial fluid resuscitation, but bicarbonate can lead to development of acute cerebral edema primarily in children and should not be used routinely.

If used, only modest pH elevation should be attempted target pH of about 7. When plasma glucose becomes Insulin dosage can then be reduced to 0. Insulin replacement may then be switched to regular insulin 5 to 10 units subcutaneously every 4 to 6 hours. When the patient is stable and able to eat, a typical split-mixed or basal-bolus insulin regimen is begun.

IV insulin should be continued for 1 to 4 hours after the initial dose of subcutaneous insulin is given. Children should continue to receive 0.

Foods we eat are broken down by the body, and much of what we eat becomes glucose a type of sugar , which enters the bloodstream. Insulin helps glucose to pass from the bloodstream into body cells, where it is used for energy. Insulin normally is made by the pancreas, but people with type 1 diabetes insulin-dependent diabetes don't produce enough insulin and must inject it daily.

Scholar Marcia R. Lieberman openly criticizes continuing concepts in fairy tales that convey a certain image of women and represent pseudo-womanly characteristics which even may remain valid today. As a contrast, she argues that it is rather difficult to understand how children reading fairy tales should learn something else than the demand of society towards women to adjust to traditional social roles Lieberman Though we are not able to determine the extent, we know that children are culturally conditioned by the best-known stories, mainly by those picked up and converted by Disney.

Besides behavioral patterns, value systems and the prediction of consequences, Lieberman implies that fairy tales present roles, behavior and psychology according to gender ibid.

Further on, she assumes that sexual role concepts and their limitations can be reviewed through a close examination of the presentation of women and girls ibid. In connection to this aspect, Lieberman explains that one might ask himself how the stereotyped feminine traits emerged and suggests that they either they have a biological origin or they are social constructions.

A mere look at the channels of acculturation would demonstrate that women perceived many impressions that formed their self-identity from the fairy tales they loved as a child ibid.

First, she states that beauty and the appearance of a girl are defined as the most valuable characteristic. It has a strong influence of the perception one has of the actual personality, since good temper and gentleness are always connected in the stories with being beautiful. The author warns that the introduction of these competitive principles to girls may spread jealousy and envy among them and teach them to be of each other, because only the one with the pretty face will achieve something.

Moreover, Liebermann portrays the fear of girls and later, women, to be not special enough. Responsible for a misleading image is also the representation of beautiful heroines as passive characters who only have to wait for something good to happen but not acting themselves to reach their goals ibid. As an example, she names Sleeping Beauty who is found by the prince after he fought his way through thorny bushes and branches, simply because he heard about her beauty.

Additionally, marriage is a turning point in every story and as the central event it functions as a reward or as punishment for the heroine. Also, there seems to be no other kind of gratification for success but only the holy matrimony ibid.

This may also lead to the passive role women predominantly adopt. Taking a glance at the life of bride and groom after the wedding, there is very little to say.

Though The Blue Fairy Book contains many stories including marriage, the biggest proportion simply ends with marriage. Nevertheless, The Sleeping Beauty is chosen by the author to show us that staying under male headship will not bring you in trouble. Once again, women are stigmatized.

Consequently, Lieberman warns that girls may endlessly aim to be courted because they retrieve an outdated, traditional image of love and marriage from the stories they encounter in their childhood. Along with this, Lurie proposes that fairy tales also can be seen as reflections of matriarchal structures where women play a dominant role Lurie For instance, this holds true for Snow White who lays in a glass coffin where a prince finds her and falls in love with her and thus changes her destiny ibid.

She concludes that fairy tales not only depict that passive behavior of females is more adequate, but at the same time they denounce active women as ugly and wicked ibid. From another perspective, Lurie also claims that particularly older women are more active and powerful than men and not necessarily are the villain.

In The Blue Fairy Book all good and powerful women are fairies. To Lieberman, they still do not present alternative heroic figures that girls can look up to since they are rarely on the scene and only play unimportant secondary roles ibid. Hence, positive and energetic female figures are a rarity among the best-known stories. Conclusively, Lieberman remarks that it is rather controversial and paradoxical to assume that the reflected behavior of women in fairy tales is biological intrinsic.

Parsons aims to observe the messages embedded in the traditional fairy tales and gives an overview on indications that teach gender-related behavior. She examines feminist re-visions of the narratives to highlight the characteristics and stresses the importance of alternative scholarly work to overcome the patriarchal ideologies classical fairy tales convey.

She starts her argumentation by explaining that the importance of fairy tales for teachers and psychoanalysts has declined due to mass media dominance. Parsons does not question the truthfulness of the mentioned aspects; she considers them as proven. Whose to say that a girl HAS to go through a phase where she thinks of herself as a princess? If young girls believe they have to be princesses, the instant they see someone that does not fill that mold they begin asking questions, or worse, teasing.

Also, on a more amusing note. Wow I never thought of this movie in a critical way and now my eyes have been open. This could be a false example to young ladies that this is what your life should be like, however it would be a false interpretation. Its really fascinating to about just how much gender roles have changed within years just compare Cinderella, Snow White or Aurora to Belle, Mulan or Tiana for example.

Interesting take. I always said that women are not a product of their sexuality. They are who they want to be. I am somewhat of a feminist, that a women can do anything a man can do and a man can do the same. So, this is a really great take. Some look for excitement. Nice piece. This was a very insightful article, and made recall a class I took just last year in college all about the impact media has on young girls.

I agree with you every thing that involved gender. Disney needs to be more cautious on stereotypes. Great analysis! I agree with you. Pop culture has conditioned us to believe that love entails a life without independence and, for women especially, a sense of inferiority to their dominant spouse.

I definitely believe that Cinderella was one of the catalysts that mobilized the idea though. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. Cinderella has lost status twice, catastrophically: on her mother's death, as a much-loved only child of two parents; and on her father's remarriage, as the valued daughterly helpmeet. Women , particularly in the era from which this story stems, but also in modern times, are given status first by their parents and then by their husbands. The man who could insist on her retaining at least part of her status - her father - has made himself powerless, and cannot defend her.

In the panto version, another man, Buttons, wants to give her status through love and marriage but is too lowly to do so, and knows it.

It works like this: when sleeping, baby lies on the sensor pad s. These pads detect baby's movements, even the very very slight ones during normal sleep. But if she does not move for 20 seconds or more, an alarm will alert parents. Because too long breathing pauses are linked to severe sleep apnea and SIDS , this type of monitor is also called a sids monitor. And it does sound like the perfect supervisor if you worry about SIDS or sleep apnea. But there are of course pros and cons: some parents can't even imagine getting one, others only sleep when it is on and have reported saving their baby's life thanks to an angelcare baby monitor.

Pros and Cons of an Angelcare Baby Monitor My main concern: these monitors may give you too much peace of mind I know, you need peace of mind to get some sleep and this monitor can really help with that. Angelcare AC Thank you to the WeeSpring Parent panel for this monitor!! I love the Angelcare movement monitor. I had an Angelcare monitor years ago with my first born, but this newer model has great improvements. First, I absolutely love that it is wireless! This is great for safety, but also because you can arrange the crib wherever you want in the nursery without worrying about reaching an outlet.

Being a former preemie Mom, having a movement sensor is very important to me. The peace of mind it provides is priceless!! When we travel, we can also easily bring this along without dealing with wires and cords, and still have peace of mind that our baby is sleeping safely. Date published: Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for all such devices. In , the U. Consumer Product Safety Commission ordered a recall of Angelcare movement and sound monitors after two babies died.

They had been strangled by cords attached to the device. There is a real logistical challenge here, too. And the thing is, people are buying them anyway.

A lot of people. But why?

The impulse travels to muscles and causes short, sustained muscle contractions. The taser has two modes: the first, pulse mode, causes neuromuscular incapacitation as the neural signals that control muscles become uncoordinated, and muscles contract at random. The second mode, drive-stun, uses pain to get compliance. The current -- either direct, DC, or alternating, AC -- is the rate at which electrons going down a wire travel per second. Alternating current is what is typically used in wall sockets and it's more dangerous, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association, causing more extreme muscle contraction.

An ampere, or amp, is the unit used to measure current. A small current -- microamps —- applied directly to the heart can cause a fatal rhythm called ventricular fibrillation.

Humans have protective mechanisms: The skin, which provides high resistance to electricity, and soft tissue, which surrounds muscles and organs like the heart, also reduce the current. For example, a current applied to the arm will be reduced to. TASERs have a 2 milliamp current and it takes at least 1, milliamps -- 1 amp -- to injure muscles, nerves and the heart. Earlier this month, Milwaukee Police officers were criticized for the violent arrest of Demetrious Lowe, 25 who ignored their orders and punched them repeatedly.

Police later said he appeared to be experiencing a mental health episode. Witness video circulated widely on social media showing a swarm of officers punching and kicking Lowe once he was on the ground.

At one point, police appeared to use a Taser on him. The man later was charged with three felony battery counts. In , a supervisor at the House of Correction was suspended after delivering a drive stun with a Taser to the left wrist of a mentally ill year-old woman, who was alone inside a segregation cell at the time. Flying robots are usually way, way, way over-engineered, with ridiculously over the top components like two whole wings or an obviously ludicrous four separate motors. Maybe that kind of stuff works for people with more funding than they know what to do with, but for anyone trying to keep to a reasonable budget, all it actually takes to make a flying robot is one single airfoil plus an attached fixed-pitch propeller.

And if you make that airfoil flexible, you can even fold the entire thing up into a sort of flying robotic swiss roll. This type of drone is called a monocopter, and the design is very generally based on samara seeds, which are those single-wing seed pods that spin down from maple trees.

The ability to spin slows the seeds' descent to the ground, allowing them to spread farther from the tree. It's an inherently stable design, meaning that it'll spin all by itself and do so in a stable and predictable way, which is a nice feature for a drone to have—if everything completely dies, it'll just spin itself gently down to a landing by default. F-SAM stands for Foldable Single Actuator Monocopter, and as you might expect, it's a monocopter that can fold up and uses just one single actuator for control.

There may not be a lot going on here hardware-wise, but that's part of the charm of this design. The one actuator gives complete directional control: increasing the throttle increases the RPM of the aircraft, causing it to gain altitude, which is pretty straightforward. Directional control is trickier, but not much trickier, requiring repetitive pulsing of the motor at a point during the aircraft's spin when it's pointed in the direction you want it to go.

F-SAM is operating in a motion-capture environment in the video to explore its potential for precision autonomy, but it's not restricted to that environment, and doesn't require external sensing for control. While F-SAM's control board was custom designed and the wing requires some fabrication, the rest of the parts are cheap and off the shelf. If you look closely, you'll also see a teeny little carbon fiber leg of sorts that keeps the prop up above the ground, enabling the ground takeoff behavior without contacting the ground.

You can find the entire F-SAM paper open access here , but we also asked the authors a couple of extra questions. IEEE Spectrum: It looks like you explored different materials and combinations of materials for the flexible wing structure. Why did you end up with this mix of balsa wood and plastic? Shane Kyi Hla Win: The wing structure of a monocopter requires rigidity in order to be controllable in flight.

Although it is possible for the monocopter to fly with more flexible materials we tested, such as flexible plastic or polymide flex, they allow the wing to twist freely mid-flight making cyclic control effort from the motor less effective.

The balsa laminated with plastic provides enough rigidity for an effective control, while allowing folding in a pre-determined triangular fold. Can F-SAM fly outdoors? What is required to fly it outside of a motion capture environment? Yes it can fly outdoors. It is passively stable so it does not require a closed-loop control for its flight.

The motion capture environment provides its absolute position for station-holding and waypoint flights when indoors. For outdoor flight, an electronic compass provides the relative heading for the basic cyclic control.

We are working on a prototype with an integrated GPS for outdoor autonomous flights. A camera can be added we have done this before , but due to its spinning nature, images captured can come out blurry.

A conventional LiDAR system requires a dedicated actuator to create a spinning motion. Your paper says that "in the future, we may look into possible launching of F-SAM directly from the container, without the need for human intervention.

Currently, F-SAM can be folded into a compact form and stored inside a container. However, it still requires a human to unfold it and either hand-launch it or put it on the floor to fly off. In the future, we envision that F-SAM is put inside a container which has the mechanism such as pressured gas to catapult the folded unit into the air, which can begin unfolding immediately due to elastic materials used.

The motor can initiate the spin which allows the wing to straighten out due to centrifugal forces. F-SAM could be a good toy but it may not be a good alternative to quadcopters if the objective is conventional aerial photography or videography.

However, it can be a good contender for single-use GPS-guided reconnaissance missions. As it uses only one actuator for its flight, it can be made relatively cheaply. It is also very silent during its flight and easily camouflaged once landed. Various lightweight sensors can be integrated onto the platform for different types of missions, such as climate monitoring.

F-SAM units can be deployed from the air, as they can also autorotate on their way down, while also flying at certain periods for extended meteorological data collection in the air. We have a few exciting projects on hand, most of which focus on 'do more with less' theme. This means our projects aim to achieve multiple missions and flight modes while using as few actuators as possible.

This platform, published earlier this year in IEEE Transactions on Robotics , is able to achieve two flight modes autorotation and diving with just one actuator.
