It would be easy to get lost in the magic of Hagia Sofia swimming near the waterfall, eating organic food and searching for butterflies. For avid hikers, there are plenty of trails that lead to peaceful rivers, a wide variety of flowers and vegetation, plus beautiful mountain views.

Just about a two hour trip outside of Huatulco leads you into the lush Sierra Madre Mountains. Someone looking for peace and tranquility will find exactly that here. There are a number of guest houses in the area overlooking rivers, greenery and, of course, the mountains. Racism, classism and colonial-era caste systems are still rampant in Latin America.

The race and class divides are obvious with white Latinos in positions of power, ownership and wealth. Afro-Latinos, Indigenous peoples, the working class and poor are disenfranchised and underrepresented. It is true that the divides of race, ethnicity, power and class exist all over the world, however, this segregation is especially prevalent in Latin America. It often feels like one is stepping back in time when in the region.

Most encounters one may have with dark-skinned and working-class Mexicans will be in service-type positions. However, in Huatulco, we were blown away by the sheer power of the Indigenous force of the area, and by the fact that we were able to be side-by-side enjoying the beauty of their city with them. Indigenous people were eating in restaurants with us, not just serving us food. Indigenous people were at the beaches in Huatulco eating, laughing, swimming and enjoying themselves and their families along with tourists and expats in equality.

Indigenous people were at the grocery store shopping with their children and doing everyday life. I truly appreciated that we were able to enjoy ourselves in Huatulco and indulge in a few luxuries like eating out for dinner a few times during the week. It was a great reminder of how life in the United States becomes burdensome, and that there are places around the world that offer a fuller life.

I left Huatulco awe-inspired by its natural beauty and by the power of the thriving Indigenous communities and cultures present in the region. Communities who were, at one time, ravaged by colonizers, and their diseases, yet survived. To protect and care for that land is an act of resistance.

And our community has five swimming pools, too. The name Huatulco is more of a regional brand than a specific location. Care and consideration was also given to the sustainability of the natural environment, and the result was worth the effort. Structures were limited to low-rise only, and there is plenty of open space left in an untouched and natural state. Going to the beach is a regular pastime for the residents of Crucecita. Evenings are social occasions with folks meeting in and around the city square to enjoy street performers and music or maybe a game of darts and a few beers at one of the local watering holes.

Crucecita also has good internet, so those interested in keeping up with their favorite sports teams can watch live-streamed games or binge-watch a Netflix series. We all look forward to our deliveries as the trucks parade through town. We have a couple of decent grocery stores, but for almost everything else, we have all learned to shop online or drive to the big city, Salina Cruz, a couple of hours away.

Huatulco is a long-standing tourist destination that seems content in its role. No glitz. And glamour is reserved for mother nature and a small number of exclusive resorts. Improved access by the airlines and the planned upgrades to the highway will go a long way toward increasing exposure. For some, it is, indeed, the end of the rainbow. Well known for being a laid-back hippie town, this is the perfect destination for those interested in slow travel. Here you can learn about the conservation work the government has been doing to protect the dwindling turtle population in the area. You will learn how they protect these important creatures from when the adults bury their eggs in the beach to when the eggs hatch.

The baby turtles make the dangerous run from their nest to the water and survival rates are usually quite low in unprotected areas. You can also head over to Punta Cometa and climb up for some of the best views of the bay.

The easiest is from the southwest end of Playa beach Rinconcito. You can also get there from the other beach, Playa Mermejita. The word is starting to get out about this small Mexican town. For now, however, the charm and allure of the beach bum barefoot backpack yogi traveler still projects.

Also, I love cacti and this place is full of them. You get tropical and desert all in one! For a tourism and resort area, Huatulco seems just that much more authentic compared to other destinations on the Pacific coast.
