Bullies have a difficult time targeting people that have many friends who will stand up for them. Mix it up at lunch is one way we can promote friendship and reduce bullying at Lowell. A: One impact I saw was smiles on many faces and students making connections with kids they may have never met.

I saw students that typically sit alone at lunch have someone to sit with. I am hopeful that students will choose to sit by a new person at more lunches than just the special days organized like Mix it up. From my time in the lunchroom, I believe this is happening.

I think the 2nd and 3rd lunch had the best response and I could really see kids taking the activity seriously and making new friends. As students grow older, it is really important to expand their friendship circles and have a variety of people to make connections with. This helps reduce cliques, bullying, and isolation. Reaching out to others with kindness is one of the most important ways we can make sure school is a safe place for everyone.

Q: Are there going to be more friend building activities like this in the future? Determine a date. Do what works best for your school. Promote the event. Activities are key to the success of your Mix it Up event. Sitting at a new place during lunch is a scary thing. Make it fun. Decorate and rearrange the tables to be colorful and inviting. Play music. Get donations for giveaways from local businesses. Have a local celebrity MC.

Make it intentional. Mix it Up is a great way to help students reach out and get to know new people.
