It has vampires. The villains are mostly teenage girls girlhatecentral. The central romance is between a 17 or 18 year old honestly not too sure and a man in his mid-twenties. The whole thing is rife with opportunities for slut shaming. And yet It was not five stars fun. It was not even four stars fun! But it waaaaas fun. So first off. A dhampir is a half vampire, half human whose entire existence is dedicated to protecting the Pretty Vampires. There are also Mean Uggo Vampires.

They just want blood all the time!!! Almost like a vampire or something!!! Or, I think, a Mean Uggo Vampire can bite you. Breaking: I am the worst reader in the world. Okay, so. Bad news first.

This book is fun, yes, but it could be one million times more fun. I solved it obvs and figured out that Vampire Academy would be exactly 1,, times more fun with the following provisions. And over. Pretty Vampires are tall. Also they are pale. Also they are soooooo sleeeeeender you guys. I will never, in my life, forget that Lissa is the last of the Dragomir line. Just cut the repetition Richelle!!!!

For my sake plz!!!!!!! A lot of that is based on the construction of the plot and it is garbage, for sure, but whatever. There is so much drama!!! Apparently the only thing worse in the entire world than making steamy eye contact with a Mean Uggo Vampire is any damage to your reputation.

Sure, no problem. But your fellow students finding out you almost died? SO embarrassing. Heaven forbid. In other words: Bo-ring. Also, sooooo much of this book toes the line on girl hate and slut shaming. It seems like girls AND boys suck here, even though there are at least two 2 girl villains.

Is that better or worse????? I literally am asking because I cannot tell my own thoughts anymore. Thinking about it makes me feel like Charlie Day in that one episode of Always Sunny. Like, me trying to figure out if Rose hates women: Plus there are only two characters I actually like out of the millions upon millions who exist in this book. I like the gal a lot. And very badass. Dimitri is the way-too-old-for-Rose love interest Was that funny?

I am off my game today , you guys! Please allow me to continue to live in the happy illusion that I am sometimes funny and therefore have a game to be off. But here we are, you know?

Just have to accept it really, in all its devastating off-brand-ness. Like, yes, vampires, perhaps the least creative mythical creature to put in a young adult novel in the twenty-first century, but otherwise Pretty solid to be totally honest. Shelves: library. Guys, I had a really good time reading this one. I'm way out of the intended demographic, but color me pleasantly surprised that this was leaps and bounds above Twilight , although I'm not here to hate on those books.

As far as YA books go, this one featured one of my favorite platonic female friendships, and I'm thrilled for the portrayal of girls supporting girls as a way to build up lady power, instead of every female vying for attention in meaningless competition. I cried for Christian because he lost his parents but I also cried for Tasha because she lost her love, Vinh. I think because of that lost Tasha became "a little" crazy.

We're presented with a pretty confusing situation, without knowing who's who and what is going on I almost thought I had by mistake picked up the sequel, because it felt like I was missing out on something.

So, while trying really hard to be a badass, she ends up looking like an immature brat, and I was like: By this point I had almost forgotten about the whole vampire thing, because the book was basically a cheaper version of Mean Girls, with a lot of slut-shaming, girl-on-girl hate and most characters just being juvenile and stupid, so I was like: But then I thought, come on Jun, there must be a reason why so many people love this book You can't give up just yet!

A lot of nonsensical things happened: dead animals started to turn up everywhere, Rose was more annoying than ever, some high school hierarchy bullshit, more girl-on-girl hate, a boring love interest that treated Rose like a misbehaving child which she was, but I still wanted to slap him for it Enter a rushed and underwhelming ending, and boring characters being more boring than usual.

On top of stupidity, internalized sexism and a plot that consisted solely on young girls hating on each other, and on boys calling them names and being generally awful, add some horrible writing and a fucking weird pacing that made me want to DNF the book at least every two pages.

I don't know how anyone could read this book and not get completely addicted I mean the writing, the characters, everything about this book is perfect!! Rose is a Dhampir and Dhampirs protect the Moroi. Rose is that girl you can't help but want to be friends with. Dimitri Belikov is also a Dhampir and Roses training instructor. He's legendary and is described as a God.

He's sexy, strong, Fast as hell, level-headed, brave and a total bad-ass! But he has a soft side to him that not everyone gets to see.

They are 7 years apart in age. When they first meet Rose is 17 and Dimitri is I know a lot of people will see this as wrong and for a lot of other reasons too. But I don't give a shit You can't help who you're attracted too or who you love etc. The attraction and sexual tension between them are hot. You can't help but root for them in the future. They are the definition of true love and they bring out the best in one another. Dimitri believes in Rose and sees a great guardian in her.

Rose plans to be Lisa's proctor. Dimitri is also assigned to be her proctor. So you can see how that might complicate things. Lisa believes everyone should be treated with respect. But will also break the rules when it comes to those she loves.

Lisa meets a boy named Christian Ozera. Christian is treated like the black sheep. He's snarky and can come across as a first-rate asshole but most of its just show.

He's a hottie who wears lots of blacks. Christian has had it rough and has his walls up. They both have this connection and it draws them to each other. Lisa can be herself with him. I love these two s0 much. It is truly hands down Amazing!! I still loved the book the second time around, although I did drop one star as I'm a bit different now. I always get nervous rereading my old books because I'm afraid I will hate them, BUT, I want to slowly reread everything to see what I'm going to keep.

Fighting cancer changed a lot and hoping it doesn't come back has changed a lot of things. Happy Reading! Why does Memorial Day weekend exist? It's right up my alley for fantasy and although sometimes the characters got on my nerves, I really love the world and the plot and it was all together a great story. Before I harp on about the first Vampire Academy book, I want to comment on the series as a whole: these books are really readable and quite good fun. They pull fewer punches than a lot of other supernatural novels, and the series gets quite a bit darker as it progresses. The characters encounter myriad trials--mental instability, torture, betrayal, death, and of course true love. The primary protagonist, Rose, is especially strong; she is tough, quick-tempered, but very clever with a great sense of humor and she develops a depth and sadness as the series progresses.

Best of all, I think that most of the books in the series are consistent, building effectively on one another--something I can't say for most sagas. I wish the characters were allowed to change and deepen a little more in light of certain traumatic events throughout the series though to be fair, I think the whole aftereffect of traumatic events is explored more thoroughly in the spin-off series, Bloodlines.

I find the dialogue weirdly wooden and would prefer a little more subtext in it especially for the lest direct, more socially graceful characters like Lissa; Rose is obviously the kind of person who says what she thinks, come hell or high water! Nonetheless, the books are absorbing, probably my favourite YA vampire novels currently on the market.

Now on to a bit about the first book itself: The first book in a series of six, Vampire Academy reads like a combination of Twilight, Gossip Girl, and one of Tamora Pierce's Alanna novels. The heady mixture of vicious gossip, the supernatural, and adolescent sexuality there's all kinds of making out creates something compulsively readable and fun. Sure, the reader has to cope with sentences--stuck in the midst of dead serious scenes--that read "And then, suddenly, he was there, charging down the hallway like Death in a cowboy duster"; sure, the character development is about as subtle as a blow to the head.

And yes, it's true that the dialog is full of more dead wood than an old oak tree. None of that matters when your story is narrated by a beautiful liquorish body guard who hates books and gets slap-happy whenever anyone else so much as gives her best friend and ward--a vampire princess yes, a vampire princess --so much as a funny look.

Did I mention that this bodyguard and her princess share a psychic bond? That our tough narrator has a crush on her sexy Russian mentor who quite obviously fancies her as well? That all of the other vampire royals are full of malice and gossip? That the vampire princess has special powers?

Coming back to this series is like a warm hug as every character is familar, the plot is familar, the tone is familar. I was glad this re-read was successful as a lot of re-reads I have done this year have left me disappointed. I love this one because there are so many new developments between the relationships of the characters. Lissa and Christian are still going strong and I think they may last.

Rose and Dimitri also had some interesting developments between them, some make me want to hurt them both, others made me jump for joy. I won't say why or how but I will say that it was all a long time coming for both the good and the bad. Adrian who, while he is very charming, had a tendency to piss me of in this one. Adrian is a very confident playboy who has a penchant for trouble.

Even though he says Rose is the trouble magnet I think he can find plenty of it on his own. He shows up at the academy for some training in, wait for it, Spirit. That's right ladies and gentlemen, Adrian is a spirit user just like Lissa. He has a bit of fun throughout the proceedings which, while they were his usually trickery and teasing, actually made me laugh a bit.

I couldn't help myself when he busted out giggling during the trial or when he mentioned the next case the court might want to take care of. My breath actually caught for a moment during that scene and that in itself was surprising. Now for the bad! First, I didn't like the division that Adrian's presence created between some of the characters, which Queen Tatianna sorta had a hand in.

The division was mostly about stupid things, but there was a big thing that Tatianna laid at Rose's feet. I also thought the addition of the whole Secret Society stuff was a bunch of malarkey.

I understand that it had it's part to play in the grand scheme of things, but it just seemed out of place. At least, to me it did a little. However, this did give Jesse and Ralf a chance to once again prove their stupidity. My main issue with this book was the ending. I was in tears and I don't cry during books often. I can't tell you why, but let's just say the ending was torturous. I mean the action was great and Rose and a few of the other characters really got a chance to shine and show what their made of in this one, but the action also led to some very serious heartbreak.

At the end of the day I'm so happy and sad at the same time for the characters. They all had to loose something profound to learn new things about themselves. The very ending, the separate roads thing, I wish there could have been a better way for the characters to figure their stuff out without that.

I know that it wouldn't have been possible, but it still majorly sucks. All in all, this books was amazing, even the bad or sad parts, because it was all necessary to lay the foundation for what's next. Even though I'm not looking forward to the showdown which is hinted at for the next book, I'm still looking forward to seeing what happens next with the St. Vlad's crew.

I enjoyed meeting all the new characters, Sydney; the Alchemist, Viktoria, Sonya and Karolina; Dimitri's sisters, Olena; his mother, Yeva; his grandmother who is kind of creepy, Oksana - the spirit user and her bonded mate - Mark the shadow-kissed Dahmpir, Paul; Dimitri's nephew, Denis and his gang of Unpromised Dhampirs.

They each added a new level of intrigue and drama to the story. Abe was a seriously interesting character and the revelation about his identity at the end was awesome, though it became a bit obvious to me the second time he and Rose ran into one another. My heart breaks for Rose.

At the end of the last book she thought she had finally gotten her wish, Dimitri's love, but then it was ripped away from almost instantly. Then she gives up her future to keep a promise that she made, even if it was never spoken aloud. She rushes of to Siberia to track him down, intent on saving him from himself.

When she does finally meet up with him, their confrontation is short and doesn't end the way she had hoped. The torment she has to face, even when she doesn't realize she's being tortured, is just so heartbreaking. Dimitri, as a Strigoi, certainly showed his dark side and his skills in battle. The bridge scene almost killed me, but his last remark was so blunt it makes you realize how little emotion he really felt.

Then, on top of her own issues, she has to try to save Lissa from half way around the world, which brought it's own revelations with it. That was certainly a situation that I hoped to hear more about in the next book. The one truly surprising factor in this one was Adrian. He stepped up and became the man he needed to be, to a certain extent at least.

He was there for Lissa, being a friend and trying to keep her stay sane while Rose was gone. He stood up for Jill when Reed went a bit nuts and he even made sure to check in with Rose to see if she was ok, even though she kept telling him not to. I'm still not sure I want him and Rose to be a couple in the romantic sense, but he is starting to grow on me a bit.

I hope that he does find his HEA, even if it's not with Rose. The ending of this one was also surprising. The package that she received and the decision she makes because of it about the Dashkovs, these are definitely events I look forward to seeing through to their conclusions. I hope the next time it works out better than it did this time. I first fell in love with this series after watching the movie, Vampire Academy, back in After watching the movie I just had to know what happened with Dimitri, Rose, Lissa and Christian after the end so, I went and read book one for the first time.

I am so excited to say that the second book was just as good as the first. After, finally, finishing the fifth book I can't wait to read book sixth There are so many monumental things that happen in this book. Rose's relationship with Adrian develops a bit more, Christian and Lissa are still at odds though they do find a common ground eventually, Dimitri commits some more tragic crimes before being 'rescued' by Rose, Lissa and Christian There's more that happens, of course.

It's a long book, but that's just some of the highlights. I am so excited and I can't wait to read book six to find out the conclusions of all these stories and relationships. Well done to the author! I experienced a few moments throughout this one that made want to slap, choke, punch, and sometimes all three, one of the characters but, I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.

I understand that he is riddled ith guilt over his action as a strigoi but, his actions to Rose now are just infuriating me. To push her aside and grab on to Lissa when it was Rose who pushed for his saving is just They still have a ways to go before they can be together again, which I'm still hoping for, but they are getting there.

Not sure I could have made it through number 2. I like him, and don't want him hurt, but I'm so happy right now I could sing. That crazy had everyone fooled. They've both had their worlds rocked. I think he truly did love Rose but, Rose was right to walk away. She couldn't be with him, not with the feeling she still harbored for Dimitri.

It wouldn't have been fair to any of them. I hope he finds his person. I can't figure out what contract he is referring to. I gonna keyword search the series and see if I can find out about it.

She treats people with resp I remember reading this series in high school. She treats people with respect so long as they treat her with it. Which is saying something for her world, because her world is very hierarchical with dhampirs like her half-vampires, basically being treated as less than Moroi full-blooded vampires.

I believe this is spawned from Romanian and Russian mythology of vampires. Not just as lovers, but as two people who can relate to each other a lot more, who started out in the same area in life. They started as acquaintances and friends, and blossomed from there.

They learned and grew from one another. Rose learned to be calmer and less impulsive; Dimitri learned to be more chill and not super serious all the time. That to me was a much more fulfilling friendship than with Lissa. He was a very minor character, but I liked the little bit that we saw of him. The writing and pacing were really well-done too. She had just the right amount of sarcasm and humor, without making it annoying or cringy.

She had a very clear, strong voice that was her own, the descriptions were well-done, and all the events were spread out nice and evenly among the six books. Each book ended at a good place that would make me want to continue on to the next book. Each book had the right amount of action, suspense, and plot development. I liked how this series ended, and am satisfied with it. But, it is actually a very decent series, especially in the YA vampire genre.

I have way too much free time and I would never have paid money for this book but when I saw the whole series at my school library I went, eh why not.

This is a perfect example of opposites attract. I mean, come on. And I kept reading. One thing that kept me reading was the sliver of a hope that there would be a scene when Rose had the realisation, or an invention, about this toxic relationship and she would get out the relationship. If only Dimitri was either within maybe two years of her age and not her teacher, or more than two years of her age and not her teacher and also started making advances AFTER she was 18, id be fine with it.
